Time Distortion

Time distortion refers to the subjective experience of time feeling elongated or compressed compared to our usual perception of time in ordinary waking consciousness. It's a common altered state of consciousness (ASC) experienced during meditation.

There are two primary types of time distortion:

Time Expansion (Time Dilation): In this type of time distortion, individuals perceive time as passing more slowly than it actually is. For example, a few real-time minutes may feel like an extended period during the altered state. This effect is commonly reported during intense situations, such as life-threatening events, when individuals may experience their senses and cognitive processing operating at a heightened rate.

Time Compression (Time Contraction): In contrast, time compression refers to the perception of time passing much more quickly than it does in reality. This can give the impression that events are unfolding rapidly or that hours have passed when only a short period has elapsed. Time compression is often associated with enjoyable or absorbing activities, such as engaging in creative endeavors, deep meditation, or "flow moments" where individuals are fully immersed in a task.
